Long Island is located in the state of New York, surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean. It is one of those places that everyone has heard of but not one that everyone has visited. Long Island runs 118 miles in length and is home to around 7 million New Yorkers. Hamptons, a wealthy community, is perhaps the most notable part of Long Island.
The most ideal time to visit Long Island is during the summer when you can enjoy its beaches. During the winter, the weather and often times, the snow, makes traveling unpredictable and difficult. Because lodging in Long Island and the surrounding area can be quite expensive, if you want to save time, you can look into staying across the River in New Jersey, where you are only a train ride away.
Long Island has attractions for visitors of all interests including amusement parks, water parks, nightclubs, unique markets, and performing theaters. Its beaches are famous for their white sand, boardwalks, beach trails, eateries, and spectacular sunsets and sunrises. Some of the notable beaches are Jones Beach State Park, Main Beach, Long Beach, Coopers Beach, and Montauk. Montauk is located on the easternmost tip of Long Island. With many marinas, hotels, and seafood restaurants and lighthouse, Montauk is sure to be a superb attraction. You can climb 137 to the deck of the Montauk Point Lighthouse for a view you won’t soon forget.
Aside from the beaches, Long Island’s Gold Coast Mansions boasts some magnificent architecture. The setting for the Great Gatsby is known to have been inspired by these mansions. The museums, gardens, and art galleries will take you back to the 1900s. If you are looking to get a taste of history, then this is a great spot to check out.
For the children, there are museums for kids, science centers, and an aquarium that is sure to delight children and adults alike. The aquarium has a 120,000-gallon shark tank and sea lion shows year round. Long Island is the perfect place to show your children that learning and fun are not mutually exclusive. Whether you are visiting New York as a family, as a solo traveler or with your partner, you are going to find plenty of enjoyable things to do.
